Legion of Mary
We welcome the members of the Legion of Mary to our parish community this weekend. They will give a presentation at all Masses in preparation to establish a Legion ministry in our parish. The Legion of Mary is the largest world-wide apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church with over three million active members in almost every country in the world. The main goal of the Legion of Mary is the sanctification of its members through prayer, the sacraments and devotion to Mary and the Trinity, and of the whole world through the apostolate of the Legion. The operational structure of the Legion of Mary is more like that of St. Vincent de Paul and the Knights of Columbus. They have a base unit in a parish (Praesidium) that meets weekly, a zonal unit (Curia) that coordinates several Praesidia, a regional unit (Comitium) in charge of several Curiae, the diocesan/state level unit (Regia), the national unit (Senatus), and the overall central unit (Concilium) which coordinate the Legion worldwide.
We are blessed for the opportunity to establish a Praesidium in our parish. I encourage everyone to prayerfully consider joining the Legion of Mary to help deepen our prayer life and strengthen our charity works to our neighbors.
Disbursement Check From the Diocese of Phoenix
I am glad to share with you that we received a check yesterday from the Diocese to St. Benedict in the amount of $11,000. This fund is a portion of our total parish share of the Diocesan Capital Campaign (Together Let Us Go Forth ~ Juntos Sigamos Adelante) conducted in 2019. As you may recall, and for new parishioners who are not familiar with this, our overall goal for the campaign was $1.3Million. We made over 50% of the goal by pledge, raising over $600,000. The plan was for the Diocese to return 35% of cash payment from our parish back to us. We decided from the onset that the funds wouldl be restricted for the following items:
Purchase of pews in our new Church building
Purchase the main Crucifix in the Church
Modification of the building and expansion of St. Vincent de Paul Pantry
Upgrading of the telephone system and security cameras at St. John Bosco School
Tuition assistance program for St. John Bosco School
From 2019 to date, we have received a total of $75,000 from the Diocese as our 35% share of the campaign. I thank everyone who participated in the campaign. The fund has enabled us to already fulfill some of the items listed above such as the upgrading of the telephone and security cameras as well as a tuition assistance program at St. John Bosco. We have also relocated the St. Vincent de Paul Pantry out of the main Church building. It is a five year campaign and we receive two disbursement checks each year.
