Dear Brethren,

Let us take some time to wish Deacon Ed Winkelbauer a happy birthday as he marks the anniversary of his birth this weekend. Deacon Ed is part of the “glue” that holds our Parish and School together with his kindness, sacrifice, determination and faith. May God bless him and his family abundantly.

We want to express our gratitude to Frank and Dianne Polimene for making and donating a much needed credence table for use during Eucharistic celebrations. Recall that Frank made the cross in our new church, installed the Corpus on the cross, made the Altar and Ambo both in the Church and in the Chapel, and many other pieces of sacred furniture. Frank and Dianne, your parish cannot thank you enough, and so we pray that God blesses your generosity abundantly. 

On Monday, 2nd of February, we shall be celebrating the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as “Candle Mass.” On this day, the Religious re-dedicate themselves to Christ and His mission and so it is observed as the “World Day for Consecrated Life.” Although it is not a Holy Day of Obligation, we are encouraged to attend Mass in commemoration of the day when Jesus was presented to the Father in the Temple. Here at St. Benedict, we shall have Mass in the chapel, preceded by the blessing of the candles, and a “candle procession”. Please bring your candles and plan to be in the church before 8:10am when we shall begin the ceremonies.

Friday, the 6th of February, will be the first Friday of the month and, as usual, we shall have our day of Adoration which will begin at 9am and end with a Benediction at 5:50pm. During the Benediction, we shall be praying Vespers together, the liturgical evening prayer of the Church.  Benediction is one of the spiritually-nourishing activities that is gaining a lot of traction in our parish. If you have not yet been to one of our Benedictions, please join us on Friday and experience the joy of praying with the Church. 

This weekend marks the official start of the annual Charity and Development Appeal throughout the Diocese of Phoenix. This year’s theme is “Faith Lights the Way” and to echo the words of Bishop John Dolan: “Each year, your support of the Charity and Development Appeal brings that faith to life strengthening over 70 ministries, parishes, schools, and charities — feeding the hungry, educating students, caring for the elderly, and walking alongside those who suffer. Through these acts of love, you carry the light of Christ to those who need it most.”

Please join us in making a gift to the CDA through give.dphx.org/ and help us reach our parish goal of $99,844. 30% of any funds raised above our goal will come back to St. Benedict. Thank you for your continued support of this important appeal.

Dediquemos un momento a felicitar al diácono Ed Winkelbauer por su cumpleaños, que celebra este fin de semana. El diácono Ed es parte del «pegamento» que mantiene unida a nuestra parroquia y nuestra escuela con su amabilidad, sacrificio, determinación y fe. Que Dios lo bendiga abundantemente a él y a su familia.

Queremos expresar nuestro agradecimiento a Frank y Dianne Polimene por fabricar y donar una mesa de credencia muy necesaria para su uso durante las celebraciones eucarísticas. Recordemos que Frank hizo la cruz de nuestra nueva iglesia, instaló el Corpus en la cruz, hizo el altar y el ambón tanto de la iglesia como de la capilla, y muchas otras piezas de mobiliario sagrado. Frank y Dianne, vuestra parroquia no puede agradeceros lo suficiente, por lo que rezamos para que Dios bendiga abundantemente vuestra generosidad.

El lunes 2 de febrero celebraremos la fiesta de la Presentación del Señor, también conocida como «Misa de las Candelas». En este día, los religiosos renuevan su consagración a Cristo y a su misión, por lo que se celebra como el «Día Mundial de la Vida Consagrada». Aunque no es un día de precepto, se nos anima a asistir a misa en conmemoración del día en que Jesús fue presentado al Padre en el Templo. Aquí, en San Benito, celebraremos misa en la capilla, precedida por la bendición de las velas y una «procesión de las velas». Por favor, traigan sus velas y procuren estar en la iglesia antes de las 8:10 a. m., cuando comenzarán las ceremonias.

El viernes 6 de febrero será el primer viernes del mes y, como de costumbre, tendremos nuestro día de adoración, que comenzará a las 9:00 a. m. y terminará con una bendición a las 5:50 p. m. Durante la bendición, rezaremos juntos las vísperas, la oración litúrgica vespertina de la Iglesia. La bendición es una de las actividades espiritualmente enriquecedoras que está ganando mucho impulso en nuestra parroquia. Si aún no ha asistido a una de nuestras bendiciones, únase a nosotros el viernes y experimente la alegría de rezar con la Iglesia.

Este fin de semana marca el inicio oficial de la Campaña Anual de Caridad y Desarrollo en toda la Diócesis de Phoenix. El tema de este año es «La fe ilumina el camino» y, haciéndonos eco de las palabras del obispo John Dolan: «Cada año, su apoyo a la Campaña de Caridad y Desarrollo da vida a esa fe, fortaleciendo más de 70 ministerios, parroquias, escuelas y organizaciones benéficas, alimentando a los hambrientos, educando a los estudiantes, cuidando a los ancianos y acompañando a los que sufren. A través de estos actos de amor, lleváis la luz de Cristo a quienes más la necesitan».
